What life is like next to an ‘awful’ furniture store that’s been empty for 10 years

Families demand action on the condition of an old abandoned furniture showroom. The showroom, on Shelton New Road, Hartshill, closed 10 years ago when the family business Gilberts House Furnishers went into liquidation.

Plans were approved to build 14 homes on the site in 2018 – and planning approval was then granted for 22 homes in January. But so far no work has been done. Now residents say the building attracts anti-social behavior and they have seen young people breaking into the site. They want it to be used wisely.

Oliver Constable, 23, of Shelton New Road, said: “I noticed some people were there the other day and they didn’t look like they were working. It looked like they were having fun there -in. I’d like to see something done with it.

“It’s a bit of an eyesore. Anything would be better than a dilapidated, empty building. Something should definitely be done. It could be put to good use.”

Reji Philip also saw young people hanging around the empty building. The 49-year-old, from Shelton New Road, said: “It has been empty for years. I have seen boys inside and because it has not been used for a long time young people are committing professional misconduct.

“It’s not good for the community, it should be replaced with a housing complex or a shopping complex. It’s an eyesore. I would like something to be done with it rather than abandoning it.”

And Mihail Emanuel Antoniei agrees. The 29-year-old, from Shelton New Road, said: “I think they should build houses there. It will change the view, at the moment it’s unsightly. I would like something to be done with it. that.

“It’s not pleasant to watch. It destroys the area. It looks like it’s been empty for 100 years.”
