The Scottish Regional Hospice Golf Tournament is still ongoing
LAURINBURG – The 35th Annual Scotland Regional Hospice Golf Tournament is just around the corner and there is still time to register. The event, which will take place September 14-15, has raised more than $ 4 million for patient care since its inception in 1987. Despite the pandemic, the Scotland Regional Hospice has received massive support. The fundraiser has almost reached its sponsorship goal of $ 80,000 (currently $ 73,000), and all golfers’ availability for Wednesday, September 15 has been claimed. There are still some gameplay opportunities for men and women available for Tuesday, September 14th.
The tournament, which has run continuously for 33 consecutive years, was canceled in 2020 due to North Carolina’s ban on mass gatherings. This year’s tournament moved from one year of its normal spring time slot to September and the committee worked with staff from Scotland Regional Hospice, Scotland Health Care System, tournament sponsor Golf Pride Grips and the host of the Scotch Meadows Country Club tournament to change the usual format of the event to distribute its participants and guests and to make the event as safe as possible against COVID.
170 golfers took part in the 2019 tournament which raised just over $ 130,000. Golf Pride Grips tournament sponsor employees and over 60 volunteers across the community make the tournament possible by participating in the planning process, recruiting sponsors, requesting vendor silent auctions, recruiting golfers and helping with the day-to-day activities of the event.
Each golfer receives a gift of Golf Pride Grips, unlimited food and drink during the day, and an invitation to dinner at the closing ceremony on Wednesday evening. Golfers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of skill events throughout the day, including a putting challenge for a cash prize of $ 5,000 and a hole-in-one challenge for a car made possible by the insurance agency Wade S. Dunbar and Scotland Motors. The event concludes each year with the draw for the Lawson’s Gift Raffle, a jewelry raffle sponsored by Bob’s Jewel Shop in memory of Lawson McCabe.
While the largest portion of the total fundraising comes from local businesses and individuals sponsoring the tournament, the accompanying silent auction also contributes to the tournament’s success. The auction typically has over 300 items including tickets to the Myrtle Beach attraction, whitewater rafting trip, weekend getaways, tickets to multiple varsity football games, balls autographed and other sports memorabilia, handmade furniture, artwork, golf equipment and much more. While these items increase enthusiasm, items and services from local businesses and artists generally receive the most deals.
