After a two-year hiatus, the 17th National Furniture Fair is scheduled to kick off on October 6, with the aim of further developing the furniture industry locally and globally.

The fair – the country’s largest furniture industry event – will be held at the international convention city of Bashundhara in the capital and will run until October 10.

The Chairman of the Bangladesh Furniture Industry Owners Association, Salim H Rahman, revealed this during a virtual press conference on Saturday where the Association’s Secretary General, Md Elias Sarkar, the Deputy chairman and organizer of the fair committee Alhaj Sheikh Abdul Awal and organizing secretary A Karim Mazumdar were present.

Mr. Rahman, also managing director of Hatil, said a total of 182 booths from 34 companies, including Hatil, Akhtar, Navana, Pertex, Regal, Nadia and Brothers, will showcase their latest products at the mega event.

Calling the event a key to the development of the sector, he said the industry was recovering from the shocks of the coronavirus pandemic which had forced them not to hold such a big event.

As the situation began to improve, they decided to resume the annual event this year, targeting both domestic and overseas markets, he said.

He also informed that Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun may attend the inauguration of the exhibition as the main guest.

A children’s painting competition on the theme “Houses as pictures” will also be organized alongside the fair.

Attractive prizes will be awarded to 10 participants for drawing the best picture and each participant will receive a certificate and a sketchbook.

According to the organizers, the objective of this fair is to develop the local furniture industry as well as to increase exports abroad, since the export of furniture has increased considerably in recent years.

The country exported furniture worth $190.36 million in the fiscal year 2021-2012, which is 38.87 percent more than the previous fiscal year.

Currently, furniture is exported from Bangladesh to various countries in the world including India, Nepal, USA, UAE, Bahrain and European Union countries.
