The free grand bac and eco-station events are back

The City of Edmonton is once again offering residents the opportunity to drop off furniture, appliances and other items that cannot be picked up during regular garbage collection at a series of free events on large ferries and ecological stations.

The events will take place on select weekends between May 7 and September 18 at eight locations across the city. These events allow residents to recycle or dispose of household items that are too large for regular collection free of charge.

This year, two events will feature additional family and resident-focused information and activities. By dropping off items, family members can learn more about City services, trucks and equipment. These additional activities will be available during Big Bin events at the Terwillegar Recreation Center on May 28 and 29, and at Northlands Coliseum on August 20 and 21. More details will be posted online at as they become available.

Prior to attending, residents are encouraged to review the list of accepted materials. Authorized items include:

  • sofas, chairs, mattresses and other household furniture too big to pick up at the curb
  • refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers and other major appliances
  • computers, televisions and other household electronics
  • grass clippings and yard waste, including branches with a maximum diameter of 1.2 m (4 ft) and 0.75 m (2.5 ft) (accepted free of charge at all times of the year)
  • tires and scrap
  • excess household trash (should not include food scraps or recycling)

All materials will be accepted free of charge, including bulky items, appliances and electronics. Residents attending big bin events are required to unload their own vehicles. The City reminds that significant interest is expected for these events and that queues are expected.

Household hazardous waste, including paint, varnish, household cleaners or batteries, will not be accepted. These items should be taken to an eco-station for proper disposal, free of charge, at any time of the year.

In addition to the Big Bin events, the City of Edmonton will also be hosting four free Eco Station weekend events on the following dates:

  • April 30 and May 1
  • June 18 and 19
  • August 27 and 28
  • October 1 and 2

These events will take place at all eco-stations, which will be open between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Free weekends do not apply to the Edmonton Waste Center for residential depots.

Edmonton residents who are unsure how to dispose of particular items, or if an item is too large for regular collection, are encouraged to use the WasteWise app. The app simplifies sorting, as users can search for items and find out how they should be disposed of. WasteWise can also provide weekly collection day reminders, so residents never miss a collection day. Download the WasteWise app for free today from the App Store or Google Play.
