Pop-up Consignment Event in Palmer Welcomes Hundreds of Community Vendors
PALMER, Alaska (KTUU) – Thrift shop fans rejoice: The 18th season of the Consign49 event officially kicked off today at Raven Hall at the Alaska State Fairground.
Hundreds of community members use the pop-up store as a way to declutter and reuse items they no longer want or need for shoppers looking to steal a bargain. Consign49 owner Rayanne Ori said it was a win-win for buyers and sellers.
“This is sustainable shopping at its finest,” Ori said.
The center of Raven Hall features rows of clothing racks organized by clothing style and size. Jeans, sweaters, t-shirts, scrubs, suits and shoes – all sold by individuals within the community – are priced and tagged for shoppers to browse.
People interested in selling items at the event register in advance, choose their prices, then catalog their items from home using an online system. From there, barcode labels are printed and placed on the items, letting the organizer know who sold what.
“And then we take them and form this big resale pop-up event where you can shop from a wide selection of closets from over 300 local community members at once,” Ori said.
The community thrift store operates much like a normal clothing store, with shopping bags, dressing rooms, and a checkout area – and it’s not just thrift store. Vendors are also on hand to sell vintage items, furniture, jewelry, books, and more.
Consign49 started in 2013 at Palmer Train Depot and focused more on high-end items. But as the event grew in popularity, the need for more space also increased.
“We saw a need,” Ori said. “…we wanted to do it for everyone and just, you know, have something to find for everyone.”
After the event ends on Tuesday, April 19, consignees have the option to take home any unsold items or by donating them to the My House Foundation. Ori said every year thousands of items are donated to the non-profit organization which aims to help homeless youth in the community.
Consign49 will be closed on Sunday for the Easter holidays.
