5 clever ways to use your iron without clothes
We all know how an iron can keep our clothes fresh, but did you know it can be used to do more than just smooth out fabric? From cleaning up surprising messes to helping you prepare breakfast in your hotel room, we’ve rounded up the best hacks that can make your life easier and maybe just reduce your need for buy other tools.
Erase heat stains on the coffee table
Have you ever put a hot cup of tea on your wooden coffee table without a coaster? If so, you’re probably familiar with that white heat patch that appears.
An iron can actually help fix the spot. To do this, place a thin towel over the white mark and set your iron to medium heat with the steam function on. Place it gently on the towel for 10-15 seconds. Repeat if necessary. The white spot should disappear.
Make DIY Laminated Flowers
Preserve beautiful flowers to make them last a lifetime by creating a unique botanical print. There is no need to buy a laminator when you have an iron. The flowers should be in perfect condition and dried, either by the sun or by being sandwiched in a book between paper towel. Remove any unwanted leaves and lay the flowers flat between two sheets of waxed paper.
Make sure your iron’s water tank is empty, eliminating the risk of steam escaping. Place a paper towel on top of the waxed paper. Press the iron on top to laminate the papers together. Let cool 10 to 15 seconds. Frame and hang the display for a bespoke decorative item or send it to someone you love as a special gift.
Release spilled and dried wax
If spilled candle wax is not dealt with immediately, it can harden and be difficult to remove cleanly. If you’re already too late on a mess like that, cover the blob of hardened wax with a paper towel and place your iron over it. The heat from the iron will warm the wax, allowing the paper towel to absorb it. Wipe off any excess liquid with another paper towel and the surface will be like new.
Make fudgy sandwiches on the go
This hack gives new meaning to the phrase “iron chef”. On your next hotel stay, use your iron to make a grilled cheese sandwich in your room instead of skipping for lunch.
To create, place two slices of bread on a large sheet of foil. Butter each side and fold two slices of cheese between them. Wrap the sandwich in foil and press down with your iron for two minutes. Flip the sandwich over and press again for another two minutes. Peek into the foil to see if the cheese has melted to your satisfaction. Otherwise, repeat the process. Believe it or not, there are several other meal options you can make using your iron!
Restore carpet bumps after moving furniture
If you have carpet, you know how it goes: you move a piece of furniture and you get stuck with a carpet bump. To remedy this, place a damp cloth over the problem spot and gently rub the top of your iron with the steam setting. After thirty seconds, remove the iron and brush and lift the fibers with your fingers or an old toothbrush.
